This was my first "Fun Fly" and it was ...fun. It was the first time I competed against others to see if my flying skill matched theirs. (Sadly, it didn't). But it was .... fun. I did notice a few things however that maybe we can improve on. There were a lot of planes out there but most of them sat on the ground all day. I'd say half the guys were sitting around watching as the rest of us tied up the runway and airspace. Maybe they would rather have been flying? I suggest that instead of having special fun fly days every month or so that we have one fun fly event each Sunday. No money involved,or maybe just a dollar with the top three finalists taking the money. Just one event to pit flying skills against one another. And keep the event short. No more than 90 minutes or so. This way we have some competition and everyone gets to fly. Now all we need is a list of events. Whadda ya think?

I was one of those that watched but didn't enter as my skills would only insure my winning the "most spectacular crash" competition. I didn't mind having the airspace tied up, I learned a lot just watching. My wife has finaly figured it out that flying is only a part of the fum we have. Learning, BS'ing, sharing stories and all that social stuff is a major part of it. If I just wnated to fly I'd go out in the country and chase dust devils or such. Cudos to all that put in the time making the fly a fun time. Thanks!!

As my wife said, it is our clubhouse/bar, not just a flying field.

John, your idea of a monthly mini competition is a good one. I have always said we should do that. However, the only way it can work is to have one or two guys organize and run the thing as any clubmeeting discussion will end up in disaster. Maybe have a competition officer each year for the club who is responsible for organizing the 12 events. OR, just announce it and do it.
